21 Rules of Thumb - How Microsoft develops its Software
Interesting talk. Has a lot of real world relevance to my experiences.

Thursday, June 17, 2004

Joel on Software - How Microsoft Lost the API War: "Every user of your product is using the same version so you never have to support a mix of old versions. "

This is a great point. Supporting multiple customer version is a killer for a software publishing company. The only other problem is that many software publishing customers want the software in their control - not an application service provider arrangement. But from a development productivity issue killing the need to support multiple maintenance releases is great.

The Old New Thing
Interesting notes from a developer on the Windows team at at MS.

Saturday, June 12, 2004

I had a busy day today. I installed our new dishwasher. We bought it to replace the old one. We're trying to update the house. I also installed hardwood floors in the upstairs bathroom to replace the cracking and unstable tile. It looks nice. I didn't complete the entire room. I need to do the floor in the little toilet closet, but that will have to wait.

Home - The home of Spybot-S&D!
Installed this. My IE is throwing up ad pages in the background for various sites. I don't believe it is the sites. Hopefully this will help me seek and destry the spyware.

This is so cool and what a clever idea. I wish I had thought of that.
NPR : Tricks the Brain Plays
This was a cool story about the brain's processing of images. I was happy that the trick worked on me even though I'm partially color blind.

JavaServer Pages Technology - Technical Resources
Quick reference card for JavaServer Pages
So I get a lot of spam. I got some spam this morning with an attachment -

"details05_markfamous.doc                      .pif"

Now, my version of Outlook blocked this.

Note that the ".pif" is all the way over there at the end. If you took a quick glance at this, you might think it is a normal document. Most word documents are safe to open and Word normally prompts you if the document is trying to run a macro that might do something to your computer. But this document is not a .DOC document. It is a .PIF.

.PIF's are definitions of command line executions. They represent old dos programs. So if I clicked on this to launch it it would run a program.

They continue to get more sneaky.

Best rule - if you aren't sure - forward it and let a "techie" check it out for you.

We found a dead rattle snake tangled in the netting over the peach tree when we returned from vacation. I can't really begin to tell you how bad a dead rotting snake smells. I feel sorry for the snake. It probably did not have a good death being tangled and stuck in that plastic netting. I had to take the netting off the tree and use gloves to get the snake out. I had to rip pieces of the dead snake apart. After I was done I still smelled like dead snake. Yuck.

Two days ago Jen put a Howard Dean sign in the front yard. We both support him at the moment. Yesterday, our neighbors across the street put up a sign that says, "Howard is a joke." Cute. I guess that are entitled to their own opinion. I wonder what they will say when their job is sent overseas?

D-Link DWL-2000AP High Speed 2.4GHz (802.11g) Wireless 108Mbps Access Point
This was on sale at CompUSA this week. I might be able to use this in point-to-multi-point wireless bridge mode. Don't know. It's a problem because I'm using mostly Link-Sys at the moment. Maybe I can give it a try?
Hawking Technologies
I'm thinking about buying on of these and using it with the PCI wireless card in the ff archive server to allow my to put the box back in the garage. We'll see. I think they have it at CompUSA.

Bush in 30 Seconds Nice content...
Apple - Final Cut Express So Apply releates Final Cut Express 2 two weeks after I bought Final Cut Express "1". UGH. I started a support ticket with them #21029794 at 800-275-2273 to tell them that I wanted a cheap upgrade to the new version since I just bought the old version. We'll see what happens.
